Oconee County
Addressing Office

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
The purpose of an E-911 address is to assure that responses to
emergencies are as timely and efficient as possible. Therefore, addresses
are assigned based on the placement of driveways (or other access points),
and not the location of the “front” of a structure. However, it is the
responsibility of the home owner to post house numbers in such a position as
to be plainly visible and legible from the street or road fronting the
property. To minimize confusion for emergency responders, whenever possible,
the assignment of address numbers is based on a standardized distance
separation formula.
It is sometimes necessary to change an assigned address. The reasons an address may change include, but are not limited to:
§ An address issued to a vacant parcel does not correspond with the location of a new drive way
§ The addition of new occupied structures on a parcel
§ Relocation of an existing driveway
§ Subdivision of a parcel
§ Insufficient sequential address numbers to accommodate new development on a road
§ Any address related issue that causes confusion and potentially delays a timely and efficient emergency response
As they are
subject to change, utilizing address numbers for property identification
on legal documents is not advised.
New addresses must be requested in writing. An
address request form may be obtained in the Building Codes Office in the
Oconee County Administrative Complex (
Completed forms may be dropped off at the Building Codes Department, sent by postal mail, or faxed to 864-638-4168.
